Top 3 Best Free Firewalls

Firewall is a subject about which general public know very little about, But it is one of the most important aspect of cyber security. A well configured firewall can stop huge data loss and keep user protected, where as badly configured firewall will only create an illusion of security and it won’t be able to protect the system from outside threats.

Firewall can be termed as the first line of defence that a user can put to avoid a cyber attack, But most users do not have the technical knowledge to properly configure a firewall. A firewall can be either a software or a Hardware device , It depends upon the user. For the home user a hardware device is not recommended as it is best suited in a business environment. It is also not surprising that sometimes even most skilled cyber security professional will make a mistake while creating new rules in the firewall. Thus the most asked question arises, Can we get a firewall which can protect the system right out of the box ? Followed by How much dose it costs ?

In this article I am covering my top three picks for “Best Free Firewall” That is user friendly and dose not need much configuration. Each of these firewalls are best in class and the numbing given is not according the preference but according to the functionality provided by each firewall.

  • What is Firewall ?

A firewall is a network security system, either hardware or software based system that uses rules to control incoming and outgoing network traffic. A firewall acts as a barrier between a trusted network and and an untrusted network. A firewall controls access to the resources of a network through a positive control model. This means that the only traffic allowed onto the network is defined in the firewall policy , all other traffic is denied.

TinyWall is totally free, and is designed to work with and enhance your existing firewall protection.

This program is tiny in many ways. It’s the product of a single individual, not a company. Installation is quick and simple; accept the EULA by clicking Install and it’s finished in seconds. The installer is barely one megabyte in size. It doesn’t even have what you’d call a main window, just a system tray menu and a number of configuration dialogs.

TinyWall increases the control you have over the default Windows firewall and enhances its level of protection. It requires very limited user input and does away with all the irritating messages and pop-ups.

I like this firewall only because it uses windows firewall and helps user to explore more from the firewall and also it is very lightweight so the system is put on stress. It has many features but to name a few hear is a list.

  • Multiple and easy ways to whitelist programs.
  • Firewall tampering protection.
  • Quick modes, like Normal protection, Allow outgoing, Block all, Allow all and Learning mode.
  • View open ports on your machine. 100% free and clean software.
  • No fees, no ads, no paid upgrades

System Requirements :

  • TinyWall runs on all versions (including all editions and languages, 32bit and 64bit) of Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10.

  • Windows Vista users need to install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 or newer before installing TinyWall.

ZoneAlarm is an internet security software company that provides consumer antivirus and firewall products. ZoneAlarm was developed by Zone Labs, which was acquired in March 2004 by Check Point.ZoneAlarm’s firewall security products include an inbound intrusion detection system, as well as the ability to control which programs can create outbound connections.

ZoneAlarm assigns networks to the Public Zone or the Trusted Zone. By default, security is cranked to the max when you’re connected to a public network. You can connect through the network, but nothing on the network can connect back to you. In the Trusted Zone, security defaults to medium, making things like file and printer sharing possible.

If you dig into settings, you’ll find a slider that sets a security level for application control, with stops for Off, Min, Med, and Max. At the default Med (for medium) level, ZoneAlarm screens some, but not all, programs. Raising the protection level to Max caused ZoneAlarm to pop up the expected query, asking whether to allow Internet access by an unknown program.

ZoneAlarm is one of the best firewall which is free but it lacks the flexibility on the functionality side , one thing a user will surely notice is the intensity of pop-ups while we set it to Max.

System Requirements:

Note : ZoneAlarm dose not work on Windows 7 it requires Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or higher.

Summary :

Comodo Firewall is free and it does a lot more than the basics. In addition to protecting your PC against attacks from the Internet and controlling how programs utilize your Internet connection, it includes a secure browser, sandbox-style visualization, a Host Intrusion Protection System, and more. It performs all expected personal firewall tasks.

Comodo Firewall includes Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), It is enabled by default in firewall. This is not a tool for foiling attempts to exploit vulnerabilities in the operating system and popular programs. Rather, when it detects suspicious behaviour by a program, it asks you what to do. You can allow the behaviour, block it, or choose to treat the program in question as an installer. You choose to block access, you can also terminate the program, or terminate it and reverse its actions.

I personally like Comodo Firewall because of its “Game Mode” , If you turn this feature on then the firewall will only bother you if the situation is critical. It will minimize the frequency of pop-ups, which helps if you are a gamer .

System Requirements :

  • Windows Vista (32 & 64 bit versions), Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10.

  • Pentium 4 processor or better.

  • 512 MB RAM or better.

  • 10 GB hard disk space or better.
